It is 7:30 in the morning.<\/span><\/p>

You are getting the kids ready, checking whether everyone has eaten breakfast, making sure school bags are packed, replying to a work message and mentally going through everything that needs to happen that day.<\/span><\/p>

Then you leave for work.<\/span><\/p>

Maybe your child cries when you leave. Maybe you miss a school activity because of a meeting. Maybe you arrive home exhausted and realise that you only have a few hours\u2014or less\u2014before bedtime.<\/span><\/p>

And somewhere in between work deadlines, household responsibilities and parenting, a difficult thought appears:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cAm I a bad mum because I work full-time?\u201d<\/b><\/p>

If you are a working mother in Singapore and you have asked yourself this question, you are far from alone.<\/span><\/p>

The reality is that working and caring for a family can place enormous demands on the same limited hours of the day. Feeling conflicted about those demands does not automatically mean you are doing something wrong.<\/span><\/p>

The Reality of Being a Working Mum in Singapore<\/b><\/h2>

Singapore has seen more women remaining in the workforce while managing caregiving responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>

According to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), the labour force participation rate among female residents aged 25 to 64 increased from <\/span>76.1% in 2019 to 80.5% in 2025<\/b>. MOM has also acknowledged that women with caregiving responsibilities can feel as though they are forced to make a \u201czero-sum choice\u201d between caring for loved ones and pursuing their careers.<\/span><\/p>

That tension is important to recognise.<\/span><\/p>

You may want to progress professionally and still want to be there for every important moment in your child’s life.<\/span><\/p>

You may enjoy your career and still miss your children during the day.<\/span><\/p>

You may appreciate having childcare support and still feel guilty about needing it.<\/span><\/p>

These feelings can exist together.<\/span><\/p>

And they do not determine whether you are a good mother.<\/span><\/p>

Working Is Also One Way of Caring for Your Family<\/b><\/h2>

It is easy to separate \u201cwork\u201d and \u201cparenting\u201d as though the hours spent at the office have nothing to do with caring for your children.<\/span><\/p>

But for many families, that simply isn’t true.<\/span><\/p>

Your income may help pay for your family’s home, groceries, healthcare, childcare, enrichment activities, education and savings.<\/span><\/p>

Your career may also contribute to your own financial independence and longer-term security.<\/span><\/p>

MOM has specifically highlighted the importance of helping caregivers remain employed, noting that staying in work can provide a reliable foundation for their longer-term financial security.<\/span><\/p>

So instead of thinking:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cI am spending eight or nine hours away from my child.\u201d<\/b><\/p>

You might also recognise:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cSome of those hours are part of how I provide for my child.\u201d<\/b><\/p>

That does not mean money replaces your presence. It simply means providing for a family takes many forms.<\/span><\/p>

Your Children Are Learning From You Too<\/b><\/h2>

Children do not only learn from what their parents tell them.<\/span><\/p>

They learn from what they see.<\/span><\/p>

When they see Mum going to work, keeping commitments, solving problems, learning new skills and contributing to the household, they are being exposed to important lessons about responsibility and independence.<\/span><\/p>

There will still be days when you wish you had more time.<\/span><\/p>

But being a working mum does not mean you are choosing your career <\/span>instead of<\/span><\/i> your children.<\/span><\/p>

For many mothers, the real situation is much more complicated.<\/span><\/p>

You are trying to build a life in which your family is cared for while maintaining a career and identity of your own.<\/span><\/p>

You Don’t Have to Be Available Every Minute<\/b><\/h2>

Modern parenting can sometimes create an impossible standard.<\/span><\/p>

Make healthy meals.<\/span><\/p>

Attend school activities.<\/span><\/p>

Help with homework.<\/span><\/p>

Keep the house organised.<\/span><\/p>

Spend quality time together.<\/span><\/p>

Exercise.<\/span><\/p>

Maintain your marriage or relationships.<\/span><\/p>

Perform well at work.<\/span><\/p>

And somehow remain patient and cheerful through all of it.<\/span><\/p>

No one can perform every role perfectly every day.<\/span><\/p>

Instead of measuring motherhood by the total number of hours you spend with your children, pay attention to what happens during the time you <\/span>do<\/b> have together.<\/span><\/p>

Twenty minutes of genuine conversation can matter.<\/span><\/p>

Eating dinner without constantly checking your phone can matter.<\/span><\/p>

Reading a bedtime story can matter.<\/span><\/p>

Listening carefully when your child wants to tell you about school can matter.<\/span><\/p>

Small routines repeated consistently can become some of a child’s strongest memories.<\/span><\/p>

Make Your Support System Part of the Plan<\/b><\/h2>

Working full-time does not mean you have to do everything yourself.<\/span><\/p>

Support might come from your spouse, grandparents, childcare centres, domestic helpers, relatives or trusted friends.<\/span><\/p>

Accepting help does not make you less of a parent.<\/span><\/p>

It allows your child to have more caring adults around them while helping you manage the practical realities of working and raising a family.<\/span><\/p>

Where possible, parenting responsibilities should also be discussed between partners rather than automatically falling on Mum.<\/span><\/p>

Singapore has gradually expanded support around working parenthood. For example, eligible working parents of Singapore citizen children below seven can receive <\/span>six days of paid childcare leave each year<\/b>, while eligible parents whose youngest Singapore citizen child is aged seven to 12 may receive two days of extended childcare leave.<\/span><\/p>

For children born from <\/span>1 April 2026 onwards<\/b>, eligible parents also have <\/span>10 weeks of shared parental leave<\/b> to divide between them.<\/span><\/p>

These policies reflect an important reality: <\/span>raising children and maintaining a career should not be treated as a mother’s responsibility alone.<\/b><\/p>

Ask Whether Flexible Work Could Help<\/b><\/h2>

Sometimes the problem isn’t necessarily working full-time. It is the way those working hours are structured.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps starting earlier would allow you to pick your child up from school.<\/span><\/p>

Maybe working from home occasionally would remove commuting time.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps staggered hours would make mornings less stressful.<\/span><\/p>

Singapore’s Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement Requests have been in effect since December 2024. They establish a formal process through which employees can request flexible work arrangements and employers can properly consider those requests.<\/span><\/p>

Flexible arrangements are also increasingly common. MOM reported that <\/span>72.5% of private companies offered at least one scheduled flexible work arrangement in 2024<\/b>, up from 68% in 2023.<\/span><\/p>

Not every job can offer the same flexibility, of course. But if your current schedule is creating unnecessary strain, it may be worth having a conversation with your employer.<\/span><\/p>

Stop Comparing Your Motherhood With Someone Else’s<\/b><\/h2>

This may be one of the hardest habits to break.<\/span><\/p>

You see another mum preparing elaborate lunchboxes.<\/span><\/p>

Someone else seems to attend every school event.<\/span><\/p>

Another mother has chosen to stay home.<\/span><\/p>

Meanwhile, you are answering emails on the MRT wondering whether you remembered to sign your child’s school form.<\/span><\/p>

But you rarely see the full picture behind someone else’s family.<\/span><\/p>

Every household has different finances, careers, support systems, children and circumstances.<\/span><\/p>

There is no universal arrangement that proves someone is a \u201cgood mother.\u201d<\/span><\/p>

A stay-at-home mum can be a wonderful mother.<\/span><\/p>

A part-time working mum can be a wonderful mother.<\/span><\/p>

And a full-time working mum can be a wonderful mother too.<\/span><\/p>

Ask a Better Question<\/b><\/h2>

Instead of repeatedly asking:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cAm I a bad mum because I work?\u201d<\/b><\/p>

Try asking:<\/span><\/p>

\u201cIs the way our family is living right now working for us?\u201d<\/b><\/p>

That question is much more useful.<\/span><\/p>

Maybe the answer is yes.<\/span><\/p>

Maybe your children are happy, your family is financially stable, you have reliable childcare and your career gives you fulfilment.<\/span><\/p>

Or maybe something needs adjusting.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps you need clearer boundaries with work.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps responsibilities at home need to be shared more fairly.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps you need to use your childcare leave without feeling guilty about it.<\/span><\/p>

Perhaps you need to request flexible working arrangements.<\/span><\/p>

Or perhaps you simply need to stop expecting yourself to perform two full-time roles perfectly at the same time.<\/span><\/p>

Changing something does not mean you have failed.<\/span><\/p>

It means you are paying attention to what your family needs.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

And you are also allowed to miss your children while doing those things.<\/span><\/p>

There will probably be days when work wins your attention and other days when family has to come first. Balance rarely means dividing everything perfectly every single day.<\/span><\/p>

It is something families continually adjust.<\/span><\/p>

So, <\/span>are you a bad mother because you work full-time?<\/b><\/p>

No.<\/span><\/p>

Your employment status alone cannot answer that question.<\/span><\/p>

What matters far more is whether your children feel loved, supported and secure\u2014and whether you continue making space for them within the realities of your family’s life.<\/span><\/p>

You don’t have to be present for every minute to be an important presence in your child’s life.<\/span><\/p>

Sometimes, being a good mum means being there.<\/span><\/p>

Sometimes it means providing.<\/span><\/p>

Sometimes it means working toward a better future.<\/span><\/p>

And very often, it means doing all three.<\/span><\/p>
