Another developmental milestone to prepare for. Another book to read. Another activity to plan. Another skill your child could learn. Another concern to research.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And behind all of it is a familiar question:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u201cAm I doing enough for my child?\u201d<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many parents, the answer seems to become: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I should be doing more.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps good parenting was never meant to be measured by how full our children&#8217;s schedules are or how much we manage to accomplish for them.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasingly, research in Singapore points us toward a different idea: <\/span><b>parenting is not necessarily about doing more. It is about doing what matters.<\/b><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>The pressure to give children \u201cthe best\u201d<\/b><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore is a highly achievement-oriented society, and parents naturally want their children to have every opportunity to succeed.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can sometimes translate into a parenting mindset where more opportunities are assumed to mean better outcomes: more tuition, more enrichment, more structured activities, more educational resources and more supervision.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is that childhood is not simply a project to optimise.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children also need time to play, rest, explore, make mistakes, talk to their parents and experience ordinary family life.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research using data from the Singapore Longitudinal Early Development Study examined more than 2,500 children aged three to almost seven. Researchers found that parental resources and parenting behaviours were connected to children&#8217;s executive functioning, while children&#8217;s everyday activities\u2014including physical play and screen use\u2014also mattered. Importantly, the findings highlight the interaction between parenting, children&#8217;s activities and the broader family environment rather than suggesting that parents simply need to add more activities.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, <\/span><b>the goal isn&#8217;t to fill every available hour.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is to create an environment in which children can develop.<\/span><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Quality matters more than a packed schedule<\/b><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important ideas in modern parenting research is responsive or sensitive caregiving.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means noticing a child&#8217;s signals, understanding what they may be communicating and responding appropriately\u2014not perfectly, but consistently and warmly.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore researchers are studying this very idea through <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Science of LOVING<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a large-scale parenting intervention involving 624 families. The study, led by researchers from NUS Medicine, NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, A*STAR, KK Women&#8217;s and Children&#8217;s Hospital, NTU and other institutions, is examining whether strengthening sensitive caregiving can improve children&#8217;s emotional, cognitive and physical outcomes.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an important reminder for parents.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, parenting doesn&#8217;t require another activity.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may simply require <\/span><b>being present during the activity you are already doing.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading a bedtime story can become a conversation.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating dinner can become an opportunity to listen.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A walk to school can become a moment to talk.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bath time can become playful connection.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even five minutes of undivided attention can communicate something powerful to a child:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u201cYou matter to me.\u201d<\/b><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Children don&#8217;t need perfect parents<\/b><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another trap of \u201cdoing more\u201d parenting is the belief that every problem must be prevented.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents may feel responsible for anticipating every difficulty, correcting every behaviour and making every decision perfectly.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But children need opportunities to gradually develop independence too.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means allowing them to try.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes they will fail.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes they will become frustrated.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes they will make a poor choice.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And sometimes the most helpful thing a parent can do is not immediately solve the problem.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, we can ask:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u201cWhat do you think we can do?\u201d<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This gives children the opportunity to practise problem-solving, emotional regulation and decision-making.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The role of the parent slowly shifts from doing everything <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the child to creating conditions in which the child can eventually do more <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for themselves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>More screen-free activities aren&#8217;t necessarily the whole answer either<\/b><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technology is another area where parents can easily feel guilty.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore research has found meaningful associations between early screen exposure and children&#8217;s later movement behaviours. A longitudinal GUSTO study found that children who had higher screen viewing at ages two to three subsequently spent more time sedentary and less time in physical activity at around age five and a half.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recent Singapore research has also examined possible longer-term associations between infant screen exposure, brain development and adolescent mental health.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These findings reinforce the importance of healthy digital habits\u2014but they don&#8217;t mean parents need to create an elaborate programme to keep children constantly entertained.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the solution is surprisingly ordinary:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go downstairs.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walk together.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play with a ball.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read a book.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let your child help prepare dinner.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk while folding laundry.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Play pretend.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let them be bored.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Not every moment needs to be educational.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children learn through everyday experiences too.<\/span><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Parents need support, not just more advice<\/b><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is another important part of this conversation that often gets overlooked:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Parents are people too.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A parent who is exhausted, overwhelmed and constantly worried about doing everything correctly may have less emotional capacity to be patient and responsive.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is why supporting parents is not separate from supporting children.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Singapore has increasingly invested in parenting support and family programmes. The Ministry of Social and Family Development provides evidence-based programmes such as Triple P, Signposts and Purposeful Play, while Parenting for Wellness provides practical resources aimed at strengthening parent-child relationships, children&#8217;s mental well-being and parental confidence.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government initiatives have also increasingly recognised the importance of giving parents more protected time and support. Singapore&#8217;s 2026 family-support measures include enhanced childcare leave, caregiving options and other forms of assistance intended to help parents balance family and work responsibilities.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This matters because <\/span><b>parents shouldn&#8217;t have to carry the entire responsibility alone.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grandparents, extended family, childcare professionals, teachers, therapists, community programmes and other trusted adults can all become part of a child&#8217;s support system.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research involving Singaporean families has also examined grandparental caregiving and its relationship with children&#8217;s developmental outcomes, reflecting the important role that extended family can play in raising children.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asking for help is not a sign that we are failing.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, it is responsible parenting.<\/span><\/p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>So, what does \u201cdoing enough\u201d actually look like?<\/b><\/h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps it looks less impressive than we imagine.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can mean:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Listening instead of immediately fixing.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Playing instead of constantly teaching.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Setting boundaries instead of controlling every choice.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Allowing children to struggle instead of removing every difficulty.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Creating routines instead of constantly adding activities.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Putting the phone away and being fully present for a few minutes.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Resting when we need to, so we can show up with more patience.<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And perhaps most importantly, it means building a relationship in which a child knows:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can come to my parent.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am heard.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am loved.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am safe.<\/span><\/i><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don&#8217;t have to be perfect to child?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, perhaps pause and ask a different question:<\/span><\/p><p><b>\u201cWhat does my child need from me right now?\u201d<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes the answer may be guidance.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it may be a boundary.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it may be help.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And sometimes, it may simply be <\/span><b>you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span
